The DBCHS is YOUR Humane Society

The Mission of the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society (DBCHS) is to promote the humane treatment of companion animals through sheltering, adoptions, community education, and spay/neuter programs. We are a stand-alone, local non-profit entity.  We do not receive funding from national animal organizations and are dependent upon individuals and businesses from Central Kentucky that support the work we do.  For over 40 years the staff and volunteers at the DBCHS have been dedicated to helping the many abandoned and unwanted domestic animals in Boyle County.  All of our programs are designed to create a better future for the animals that cannot speak for themselves and need us most.

For the Love of Dogs: DBCHS Campaign to Build a New Dog Adoption CenterPhoto2

The DBCHS is pleased to announce an exciting new initiative.  We have launched a special fundraising campaign to build a new adoption center for our puppies and dogs, replacing our outdated and well-worn kennel of over 40 years.  We know that this new adoption center will be a source of pride in our community, as it will provide a more humane environment for the dogs and puppies in our care.  Features include central heat and air conditioning systems, noise and stress reduction elements, and a pleasant indoor environment with easy viewing of pets for potential adopters.

This large-scale project is very much a community effort.  We are counting on individuals and businesses in our community to support us with this important initiative that will ultimately create a brighter future for the homeless puppies and dogs that come to us.  This new facility will mean that more lives are saved each year–something that everyone can rally around.  For more information on the campaign and to learn more about supporting this project, visit http://www.homes4pets.org/news.htm.

Adopting from the DBCHS means giving a home to a dog or cat that needs one while at the same time adding a loving and loyal member to your family.  2012 marked the highest animal adoption rate in our history, saving over 1,200 lives.

The DBCHS offers adoption opportunities at our shelter in Danville and at the PetSmart Store in Nicholasville, KY.  Over 50% of our adoptions take place at the PetSmart store.  Scores of volunteers work with a staff member each weekend to make great animal/people matches.  Four National Adoption Weekend events result in scores of adoptions.

Happy Paws Spay & Neuter Clinic

Spay and neuter surgery is the key to ending the pet overpopulation crisis in our community. The DBCHS opened the Happy Paws Spay & Neuter Clinic in 2007.  The one‐day per week clinic for dogs and cats makes affordable surgery prices available to individuals receiving public assistance, those with low incomes or recipients of social security.  Over 7,000 surgeries have been performed at the mostly volunteer-staffed clinic, providing an invaluable service to our community and preventing more animals from entering our shelter.

Mutts with Manners

We agree with Jonathan Swift: every dog must have his day! In Fall 2009, The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society (DBCHS) launched the Mutts with Manners program to help homeless dogs find loving homes.  Sponsored by the DBCHS in conjunction with the Northpoint Training Center in Burgin, KY (Northpoint Trained Canines Program), the program pairs carefully screened prison inmates with 5 shelter dogs for a 6-week period.  Ten inmates, working together with a professional trainer, prison staff and volunteers, provide the dogs with basic obedience training, socialization, behavior modification, and one-on-one companionship.  In the end the dogs participating in the program graduate with a wealth of valuable skills that help give them an increased chance (or a paw’s up!) on finding a loving home.   They are all AKC Canine Good Citizen certified, and 29 Mutts with Manners found homes in 2012!
