On Christmas Day, more than two-hundred years ago, Dr. Ephraim McDowell performed a surgery that would change the delivery of health care. This groundbreaking procedure, which was the world’s first successful abdominal surgery, didn’t happen in one of the world’s great metropolises, such as New York, London, or Paris, where one might think the most advanced medical care was available. Dr. McDowell performed his surgery at his home on Second Street, right here in Danville. This just serves to prove that cutting edge medical care isn’t confined by location, but rather by the attitude and expertise of those who deliver care. That’s why Ephraim McDowell Health carries on the innovative medical tradition of this pioneering surgeon.

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical CenterThere is only one hospital in all of Kentucky that has been deemed a Center of Excellence for total knee & hip replacement, and spine surgery. That hospital is Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Dr. Jared Hagaman, pulmonologist, recently performed Kentucky’s first procedure using the state-of-the-art Electromagnetic Navigational Bronchoscopy to remove a “slice” of a lung tumor allowing for better diagnosis and molecular testing of the questionable tissue. For four out of five years, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center has won the Kentucky Hospital Association Quality Award. Just like Dr. McDowell, a leader in medical innovation and quality resides right here in Danville, Kentucky.

With a medical staff of approximately 300 credentialed providers, Ephraim McDowell Health places its focus on delivering the services most critical to the patients we serve throughout the region. One of those services is cardiac care. Through the Ephraim McDowell Heart & Vascular Institute, residents of central Kentucky have access to five board-certified cardiologists who provide expert cardiac and arterial care using medical technology available in the most advanced cardiac catheterization lab in the state. In fact, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center was a pioneer for allowing other Kentucky hospitals to offer interventional cardiac care after demonstrating success in performing interventional cardiac catheterizations without an on-site open heart program. The Regional Medical Center is now accredited as a Certified Chest Pain Center with PCI.

Another of the services that impacts a great number of patients in our service area is cancer care. Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center brings together an expert team of hematologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, urologists, surgeons, nurses and other health care professionals who are specially trained in the care of cancer patients and support of family members. As a member of the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, our patients can be assured of receiving safe, compassionate, high quality and cost-effective services … and they don’t have to travel far from home to receive that expert care.

The Ephraim McDowell Health system truly provides services that span the continuum from cradle to grave. Each year, nearly 1,000 babies are born at either Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center or Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital. Both hospitals have embraced the patient- and family-centered approach to patient care, and laboring mothers find comfort in remaining in one room throughout the labor, delivery, recovery, and post-partum process. When those new moms get ready to return to work, A Children’s Place – our early learning and child development center – is available to provide childcare services through the age of 10.

For individuals needing medical treatment of acute and chronic illness, Ephraim McDowell Health provides a network of family medical centers located in each of the six counties of our service area. These facilities offer primary care physicians and nurse practitioners whose scope of practice includes physical examinations, well-child examinations and treatment of acute illness. Lab and X-ray services are available on-site at most locations. Walk-in care is also available at three locations to provide non-emergency care to those seeking medical care without an appointment.

As individuals near the period in their lives when they don’t want to be bothered by the responsibilities of owning a home, McDowell Place of Danville is an option. It is an independent and assisted living community that also offers respite care in its 98 residences. All meals and snacks are provided to residents, who enjoy a greater quality of life through the variety of activities available for their pleasure.

We think our namesake would be proud of the tradition of great medical care that continues to be available in Danville and the surrounding counties.
