Creative Conversations - Centre College's Norton Center For The Arts

Creative Conversations at the Norton Center shine a light on human interests, current events, and issue-based topics that may challenge our everyday thinking, increase our awareness, and help us to expand our exploration of the human condition. The Norton Center is committed to engaging our campus, local, and regional communities in creative experiences, therefore these conversations often connect directly with academic classes, topics, and discussions already occurring throughout the campus and community. Each event is custom-selected to educate, illuminate, and inspire.

Creative Conversations during the 2019-2020 Season occurred as part of the following performances:

US and Russia: A Cultural Ideology

Day & Date: Tuesday, October 1, 2019

Beginning & Ending Time: 11:30a – 12:30p

Location: Weisiger Theater

Description: Part of the newly endowed CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS program, this Common Hour talk will focus on the current perceptions Americans have on Russia and also the perceptions Russians have on the US. More importantly, this discussion will include the value of the arts and culture as a way to show that we are more alike than different.

Rationale: With all that is being said about the current relationship between America and Russia, here is an opportunity for Centre students to engage with young Russian musicians and have a meaningful dialogue. Tentative panelists joining the four musicians for this program are Centre professors Jacklyn Johnson (international relations; idealism vs. realism) and Johann Van Niekerk (music and power), and Molly Thomasy Blasing, UK Assistant Professor of Russian Studies who specializes in contemporary Russian culture and social theory.
